AirDefense protects enterprises from pre-standard 802.11n wireless devices

Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2006

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group and the southern African distributor for AirDefense, today announced that the latter's product protects enterprises from the rising threat of rogue wireless devices based on the draft IEEE 802.11n standard.

AirDefense Enterprise 7.0 provides the most comprehensive, scalable wireless LAN security and monitoring solution available in the market today. This next-generation wireless protection platform detects and eliminates standard and pre-standard compliant rogue wireless devices and offers the industry's most extensive event library, including more than 200 performance and security events, 50% more than that of any competitor.

"For effective wireless intrusion protection, sensors must scan all four dimensions - space, time, frequency and protocol," commented Dr Amit Sinha, chief technology officer of AirDefense. "Our distributed, 24x7 sensing architecture, with intelligent frequency scanning of established and emerging protocols, allows our enterprise customers to rest assured that there are no wireless gaps in their network security."

The IEEE 802.11n Task Group (TGn), chartered with developing the next-generation wireless LAN standards capable of providing Ethernet type throughput, approved the Enhanced Wireless Consortium proposal as the draft version of the 802.11n standard in January 2006. Wireless LAN chipmakers such as Broadcom, Marvell and Atheros subsequently announced the availability of draft compliant chipsets.

Network equipment vendors such as Netgear, Linksys and D-Link have recently announced the availability of wireless access points (APs) and client cards capable of peak physical layer speeds of 270Mbps and more. While enterprises will wait for the 802.11n standard to be ratified before upgrading their wireless infrastructure, consumer adoption has already started. The AirDefense system is capable of detecting and blocking these devices, should they show up as rogues within the enterprise perimeter.

"Consumers want the latest and greatest wireless networking gear. With prices of 802.11n APs and clients dropping and the huge push from local electronics stores, it is only a matter of time before an enthusiastic employee puts one on my network and compromises it," added Brian Brindle of Carilion Health Systems. "Knowing that these new rogue devices will be caught and disabled by AirDefense is very reassuring."
