Airport kiosks investigated
An investigation of suspected credit-card fraud at Toronto's Pearson airport is now concentrating on the security of its 150 self-service check-in kiosks, says The Globe and Mail.
In recent months, financial institutions that issue credit cards spotted isolated fraud patterns that appeared to stem from use of the cards in conjunction with getting boarding passes at the Pearson kiosks, according to sources.
While the investigation is in the early stages, it is currently focused on the kiosks, where passengers use passports, frequent-flier cards, reservation numbers, names, and/or credit card data to identify themselves for flights on any one of 13 airlines. It is not known whether any information has actually been stolen or otherwise gone astray.
ATMs can help themselves
Technology solutions provider NCR is in talks with Philippine banks to deploy a new family of automated teller machines, with a self-healing capability that can significantly cut the downtime period of these machines in the country, says Manila Standard Today.
Matthew Heap, industry marketing director of NCR for Asia Pacific, said the new NCR Selfserve ATMs could recover automatically from software failures without human intervention and cut down recovery time ranging from as long as four hours to under 10 minutes.
Heap, in a briefing with journalists, said the new-generation machines had automatic shutdown and restart functions in case of software faults left unattended.
