Alcatel, together with UMIC (Unidade Miss~ao Inovac~ao e Conhecimento), the Portuguese Minister Council Unit for Innovation and Knowledge, have teamed with leading media and production partners to launch a unique initiative to promote usage of the broadband Internet, the Portuguese language, music and video artistry.

Major players include, Antena3 (national Portuguese radio), Sol M'usica Portugal (the Portuguese music TV channel, Blitz (Portuguese music newspaper) ETIC, (renowned institute specialized in music and media), the N'umero organization, TheooThezz (the production and artist management company), the Universidade Lus'ofona (the biggest private Portuguese university) and Musicais, (famous Lisbon discotheque).

They have all united to support Alcatel and UMIC for the innovative promotion of alcatel/rec - music & video awards, a contest that encourages the creation of music and multimedia video clips in Portuguese, through the global initiative - Alarga a Tua Vida (Broaden Your Life). This initiative will target Portuguese speaking people (ie. Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, S. Tome and Principe, East Timor) and all Portuguese communities throughout the world.

Beginning on November 11, any musician or video artist, understanding or speaking Portuguese, can upload their own original music or video clip on the site www.alargatuavida.com, while worldwide internet users can listen to and watch the best of the Portuguese language music and videos. They will also be able to vote on-line for their favorite artists and to select the best video clips.

Participation in fan clubs is supported and broadband Internet users can subscribe and receive the Alarga a Tua Vida newsletter, or simply browse the portfolio. The music and video clip library will grow from November 11, 2003 until May, 15, 2004, the crowning day of the Alarga a Tua Vida event, the final ceremony of the alcatel/rec - music & video awards.

There will be 8 categories for music and video clips (Fado; Portuguese Popular Music; Pop Rock; Rock; Hip Hop and Rap; Jazz, Blues and R&B; World Music and Electronic Music - including dance and house).

"This initiative combines Alcatel`s creativity, innovation and integration capabilities necessary to deliver Broadband solutions with attractive content for fixed and mobile broadband networks, with a unique event dedicated to the promotion of music and video artists that express themselves in the Portuguese language. It also illustrates Alcatel`s active involvement in the cultural and social subjects that interest or concern our society", said Rui Candeias Fernandes, President of Alcatel in Portugal.

"Attractive Portuguese language Internet content is essential and will contribute to the incremental usage of broadband by large sections of the Portuguese population. This is a determinant factor for the social, economical and cultural development of the Portuguese society", said Diogo Vasconcelos, Managing Head of UMIC - Unit of the Portuguese Government for the Mission of Innovation and Knowledge. "Portuguese language citizens have a huge potential for creating and delivering to the world much more content. Browse, see and listen to broadband Internet Portuguese language content" he added. "It will be a great moment for Portuguese creators to develop original content".

The Portuguese XV Constitutional Governmental Program, believes that the information society, innovation and knowledge have the opportunity to change the relations between citizens and the State. This can help reinvent the State, orienting it towards the citizens and to reinforce the economic competitiveness, with a focus on information technology and the communications sector.

This concept relies on creating an entrepreneurial culture and a new atmosphere that is favourable to innovation in the Portuguese society. In order to fulfil this fundamental goal, it is important to define a global strategic vision, associating the development of the information society to the main Portuguese society. This goal requires the adoption of an integrated and transversal perspective of all Government activities as well as the operational and political articulation between government members.

These national objectives complement the ones of the European Community regarding information society, expressed in the eEurope 2005 Action Plan, having the objectives of fostering the creation of employment, productivity and to modernize public services and to offer all citizens the opportunity to participate in the information society.
