Alcatel continues as leading vendor in IP PBX for Western Europe

Alcatel remained Western Europe`s leading vendor for PBX IP extension line shipments in 2003, according to a preliminary report from Gartner Dataquest on "Premises switching Equipment: Western Europe in 2003", by Principal Analyst Christopher Lock.

According to the Gartner Dataquest research brief, Alcatel continued to lead the Western European market in "all IP shipments" in 2003, controlling 24% of the market, with total line shipments for 2003 numbering 459 000 lines.

The report noted the strong sales growth of "all IP shipments": a market combining IP-enabled (1) and pure IP PBX lines (2). In 2003, shipments of this category grew by 79 percent. Gartner forecasts that IP extension line shipments will be the dominant method of delivering by the end of 2007.

"Gartner Dataquest `s report confirms the Alcatel offer is one of the most suitable for a long-term investment," says Jean-Christophe Giroux, President for Alcatel`s Enterprise Solutions. "Companies are evolving to IP communications because this powerful technology multiplies the impact of new applications and accelerates their adoption."

(1) IP-enabled IP lines: A line attached to an IP-enabled PBX phone system that terminates either with an IP phone or .

(2) Pure IP: A line attached to an IP-PBX that terminates with an IP phone or endpoint.
