Alcatel, Genesys seal deal with new product

The closure of the acquisition of Genesys by Alcatel was announced yesterday, along with the launch of the OmniPCX 4400 interface hardware.

Alcatel merged its wholly-owned subsidiary, Eden Merger, into Genesys, and Genesys in turn became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alcatel. The deal became effective as of 21 January.

Although Genesys is now wholly-owned by Alcatel, the deal allows for Genesys to operate independently of its new parent company.

The Genesys acquisition is the most recent in the string of US acquisitions Alcatel has made, amounting to $9 billion in the last 18 months.

The deal will allow Alcatel access to Genesys` strong position in the computer integration market.

"We firmly believe that sophisticated contact centre functionality will increasingly be achieved from applications, and our acquisition of Genesys places us in a unique position to deliver application-rich contact centre solutions to the enterprise, e-business and service provider markets," says Olivier Houssin, executive VP, Alcatel Telecom.

Explaining the motivation behind the deal, Houssin says: "Genesys brings Alcatel unquestioned expertise in contact centre applications and its longstanding commitment of developing open software solutions built around service delivery supports our vision for application delivery."

Europe markets reacted unfavourably to news of the deal late September last year, with Alcatel losing 2.6% on the day of the announcement.

The new product, OmniPCX 4400, is the first produced by Alcatel making use of its new access to Genesys technology.
