Johannesburg, 08 Oct 2003

Alcatel announced today that it has begun production in Brazil of its DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer), equipment that is installed in the operator`s central location allowing broadband access through copper telephone lines. According to the Dell`Oro Group, Alcatel is the world leader in xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technology, with a 37.6% market share, or four times that of its closest competitor.

Local production of DSL is being undertaken by Jabil Circuit, a company specialized in manufacturing electronic equipment. Jabil`s factory unit located in Contagem, Minas Gerais, has initial output capacity of 700,000 ASDL lines per year, which represents an investment totaling over US$ 700,000 for Alcatel. In Brazil, Alcatel manufactures the Advanced Services Access Manager (ASAM) - the most-widely installed access platform for broadband in the world.

"Broadband access using ADSL is Alcatel`s major bet for the wireline telephony segment in a period where operators are seeking to leverage their existing infrastructure by offering new services," affirms Juan Horacio Carbone, vice president of Alcatel Telecomunicac~oes and director of the Fixed Communication Group in Brazil. "With the production of the access platform here, we intend to expand even further our current broadband lead in Brazil as well as in entire Latin American broadband access market."
