Alcatel successfully deploys next-generation SDH solution

By Alcatel
Johannesburg, 21 Oct 2003

Alcatel today announced it has successfully implemented its next-generation SDH Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems equipped with integrated service adapter (ISA) Ethernet plug-in over T-Com`s "U2000+ backbone infrastructure in Germany. T-Com the fixed-network division of Deutsche Telekom, is upgrading its transmission network to provide its customers with end-to-end Ethernet services which meet the industry`s most stringent quality requirements.

Alcatel`s ISA plug-in cards integrate data-aware features into SDH transport networks enabling operators and service providers to efficiently handle data traffic. Thanks to Alcatel`s OMSNs Ethernet solution, T-Com can deliver nationwide, reliable Ethernet services with speed up to 100 Mbit/s over the existing network infrastructure with minimum new capital expenditure. Furthermore, Alcatel`s next-generation SDH systems offer point-to-multipoint switching capabilities through the ISA Packet Ring plug-in card for carrier-grade Ethernet virtual private network (VPN) services with differentiated quality of service (QoS).

The introduction of fixed Ethernet connections in wide area networks (WANs) enables operators to satisfy their customer demand for high bandwidth and secure data services. Setting up a fixed Ethernet connection over T-Com`s current SDH network allows T-Com`s end-customers to transparently link their geographically dispersed local area networks (LAN), thus eliminating the need for installing expensive WAN routers. The resulting investment savings of over 60 percent for the WAN router and in volume-based connection charges significantly lighten the load on corporate communication budgets. Operational costs related to interface adaptation for the WAN router installations are also eliminated.

Alcatel`s OMSNs with Ethernet functionality provides standardized mapping of Ethernet data streams into SDH signals according to generic frame procedure (GFP, ITU G.7041). The Ethernet interfaces are also provided in customer premises SDH and WDM equipment, such as the Alcatel 1640 FOX, Alcatel 1696 Metro Span and Alcatel 1692 Metro Span Edge products.
