Alcatel has been awarded by Mauritius Telecom a sixth expansion contract for its fixed network, which will enable the operator to offer 60 000 new telephones lines to its customers.
This extension foresees the provision of network solutions based on the Alcatel 1000 switching system. These solutions will allow Mauritius Telecom to offer a variety of enhanced voice services and ISDN access. Deliveries will start at the end of this year and the project is due to be completed around year-end 2002.
Megh Pillay, Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom, states: "This expansion is part of our strategy to offer new high quality services to our customers. This will help us cope with the exploding demand for voice, data and multimedia services. The installation of Alcatel`s network solutions will enable Mauritius Telecom to upgrade seamlessly its network and integrate new technologies."
Alcatel, which has installed 80% of Mauritius Telecom`s switching equipment, remains the leading supplier of the fixed network in the country. With this new network expansion, Mauritius Telecom will be able to serve more than 325 000 subscribers.
With more than 300 million lines delivered on digital switching systems, Alcatel connects one out of five telephone subscribers in the world.
