All gain, no pain: Noble Group invests in its communications future

3Com and CITEL solutions ensure smooth transition to Internet protocol telephony resulting in cost savings
Johannesburg, 01 Dec 2003

Judging by its consistent profitability, independent UK investment specialist, Noble Group, is well aware of what it takes to succeed in today`s depressed financial market. Faced with the challenge of finding a communications system to support an immediate expansion to its Glasgow office, and the imminent relocation of its London premises, Noble Group decided to replace its BT Meridian PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) with a 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX Networked Telephony Solution incorporating the CITELlinkT IP (Internet Protocol) Handset Gateway.

This innovative solution, supplied by 3Com Channel Partner Smartsoft Business Solutions, allows Noble Group to retain its existing PABX handsets, wiring and telephone connectors, thereby saving on the cost of replacement equipment and the time and budget involved in retraining staff. At the same time, Noble Group is reaping the benefits of an IP-based telephony network - notably a substantial reduction in the cost of making more than 600 inter-office calls per week and gaining uninterrupted, improved productivity.

"The 3Com and CITEL communications system allows us to get on with the business of providing integrated services to the corporate market without thinking about the cost, reliability or long-term future of the supporting telephony technology," said Joe Philipsz, technology director at Noble Group. "We chose the 3Com Superstack 3 NBX Networked Telephony Solution as it allows every member of staff the freedom and flexibility to communicate - internally and externally - no matter where in the world they are."

Steven Moore, Smartsoft`s managing director, believes this is a clear demonstration of the payback that can be had from incorporating the CITELlink IP Handset Gateway into a 3Com networked telephony installation: "Noble Group is getting the best of all worlds - a quick, simple and cost-effective resolution to immediate problems while building a platform for the future. There`s also none of the pain associated with a significant change in technology."

Noble Group`s Philipsz continued: "Our way of working demands flexibility from both employees and the technology that supports them. Most of our people have direct client contact and are highly mobile. We can be called upon to work anywhere, the company`s offices, from home or, indeed, anywhere in the world. The 3Com networked telephony system makes it easy to work any way we like, adding or changing users, reconfiguring the system and rerouting traffic whenever necessary. We`re also confident that the 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX solution will grow alongside the business without excess complexity or cost."

"We`re confident that we will soon see the true impact of investing in 3Com networked telephony technology by the marked improvements in bottom line profitability," Philipsz concluded.

To comply with legal requirements placed on UK-based financial companies, Noble Group`s new communication system also includes the RedBox Recorder 2620, an IP recorder that records and stores all incoming and outgoing voice traffic onto DVD.

SmartSoft managing director, Steven Moore, is an enthusiastic advocate of the 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX solution: "No other networked telephony system is so easy to install yet provides the same combination of features and functionality. The CITELlink IP Handset Gateway is just as easy to implement. It`s simply a 16-port, slide-in card that fits into any available slot in any 3Com networked telephony solution. CITELlink powers the legacy PBX telephones and enables them to work seamlessly with the 3Com networked telephony products via the 3Com IP telephony protocol."
