The Department of Education (DOE) wants every learner to finish school fully ICT literate by 2013, says DOE director-general Duncan Hindle.
Speaking at a parliamentary media briefing yesterday, Hindle said the DOE had completed an infrastructure audit. This was now part of its national electronic information management system. It would help determine the ICT needs for schools and how to manage the implementation of these going forward.
During his medium term budget policy statement speech last week, finance minister Trevor Manuel said 17 000 schools (more than half the country`s public schools) had no access to computers for learning purposes.
"Yes, that number is correct. We are now in negotiations with the National Treasury about how we can finance the roll-out of ICT to schools and what is the best way of managing it," Hindle said.
He also noted the DOE had engaged consultants to help it roll-out computers to schools and it was considering the various options available.
