Altech Autopage optimistic about RICA

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 2010

An independent communications provider, Altech Autopage Cellular says it has registered over 80% of its base in terms of the of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA).

“We have introduced a further education drive aimed at registering the final 20% of customers who face disconnection,” says Altech Autopage Cellular MD Boyd Chislett.

Chislett is optimistic that, significantly, more Altech Autopage Cellular customers will register their SIM cards in terms of RICA prior to the cut-off date.

“All communication vehicles available to us are being deployed to boost RICA registration. These include SMS, Automated Voice Messages, e-mail and online communication,” explains Chislett.

Cellular users failing to register before the end of June 2011 will have their SIM cards deactivated, meaning that they will be unable to make or receive calls, send or receive SMSes or connect to the Internet.

RICA came into effect in July 2009 and gave South Africans a year and a half to visit an Altech Autopage Cellular store or any one of thousands of other retail outlets nationwide. That timeframe has now been extended by a further six months.
