The rail agency awards Altech a radio deal as it increases security and rolls out new stock.

Altech Alcom Matomo, which provides radio communication and telemetry products and solutions, has been awarded a three-year deal by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Altech Alcom Matomo will provide tactical communication services and equipment, including a two-way radio solution, in a contract worth R25 million. The deal is part of Prasa's "ongoing interventions to ensure the safety and security of its employees and commuters," says Altech in a statement.

Altech Alcom Matomo is a division of Altech Radio Holdings, which forms part of the Altech group of companies. Altech is now a subsidiary of Altron after minorities were bought out in a R1.8 billion deal.

The basic contract provides for the supply of 18 dispatch positions with voice recording, 105 desktop radios, 188 mobile radios and 1 024 portable radios. This equipment will operate using the Altech Fleetcall national radio network communication service.

Altech Alcom Matomo operates in the field of design, installation and project management of turnkey two-way radio communication networks.

Prasa's award follows a March announcement in which Altech said it and Huawei had a signalling contract with the rail agency. That contract was worth more than R400 million.

SAP has also been awarded a contract by Prasa to revamp its ICT infrastructure and enhance its existing railway network, which it is hoped will cut down on collisions. Prasa is also introducing a rolling stock fleet renewal programme to replace old trains that are in a state of disrepair.

Earlier this year, Prasa started implementing a range of SAP passenger travel solutions that run on a single technology platform, using a consolidated technical infrastructure for railways and bus services functions such as finance, logistics, resources and maintenance, said SAP.
