Allied Technologies (Altech) subsidiary UEC has appointed Peter Balchin as its new CEO.
Balchin will take over the business as the company prepares to begin the manufacturing of SA's new TV decoders needed for the digital migration process.
According to Altech, Balchin has extensive industry experience, having worked at Pace Networks, Novatel Wireless and Nortel Networks, in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
“Peter is something of an expert in change management, with a track record of successfully establishing businesses, moving them from start-ups to mature organisations, and refocusing established businesses in line with evolving technologies and markets,” says Altech Group CEO Craig Venter.
UEC is based in Durban and he will move to the city to take up his position.
Venter has welcomed Balchin to Altech, saying: “In order to realise the full potential of Altech UEC, and to develop the organisation from our current leading position in the African market and to build on our successes in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, India and Australia, it was imperative to secure the services of an experienced and successful professional from within the industry.
“We are delighted to have been able to appoint an individual of the calibre of Peter and are confident he will lead Altech UEC to a dominant position in all of our target markets.”
Altech UEC is one of the manufacturing businesses set to build decoders in preparation of digital TV - a potentially lucrative deal. About 10 million households will need to buy a new decoder, expected to retail for between R400 and R700.
