An Allied Electronics Corporation (Altron) executive director has resigned.

Correction

This story incorrectly states the Altron executive has resigned. Dr Harold Serebro has in fact retired from Altron. ITWeb apologises for the error.

Dr Harold Serebro was a senior Altron group executive director and has left the company from this month. In a Stock Exchange News Service announcement, the company says he will assist the group with special projects when his services are required.

Serebro, who served in the office of the chairman, Bill Venter, was appointed to the Altron board in 1994. The company has not given reasons for his resignation.

He has held various roles, including chairman of the Altron group purchasing and export councils, which he established between 1987 and 1989.

Serebro also served as a non-executive director on many of the subsidiary company boards, including Altech, Bytes (formerly Fintech) and Powertech.

In the announcement, Altron says: “Dr Serebro played a meaningful role in building the Altron group into the leadership position that it holds today, and the board will miss his contribution to its growth, as well as his entrepreneurial skill that increased the profitability of Altron over the past 25 years.”

In addition to holding multiple medical degrees, Serebro was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the Free State in 2003, and received the South African State President's Export Award for and on behalf of Altron in 1994.

He is a trustee of the State President's Empowerment Award Programme and the Sexwale Family Foundation. He was also awarded Altron's highest honour, the Chairman's Distinguished Merit Award, in 1994.
