Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled the AMD 890GX chipset integrated with ATI Radeon HD 4290 graphics.
This follows the chipset maker's efforts last year to merge its microprocessor and graphics chip businesses to take on its biggest rival, Intel.
AMD says the first of its 8-series chipsets are the foundation for its 2010 Vision technology and desktop platforms, which are expected to be revealed to the public in the second quarter of 2010. They will be compatible with the upcoming AMD Phenom II X6 six-core processor.
According to the chipset maker, the AMD 890GX chipset is an affordable, energy-efficient solution suited to high-performance gaming.
The AMD 890GX supports DirectX 10.1 graphics on the motherboard and up to two high-performance ATI Radeon premium graphics cards with ATI CrossFireX technology.
AMD adds that the motherboard can be used to build a home theatre PC with Blu-ray playback using dual integrated graphics, or can be upgraded to a gaming powerhouse with ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics and DirectX 11.
The AMD 890GX chipset supports the SATA 3.0 6Gbps hard drive interface as well as USB 3.0 to help speed application performance, decrease boot times, and provide faster access to information. It can also speed up Windows 7 data access speeds.
According to AMD, the 890GX motherboards includes support for Gigabit Ethernet, HyperTransport 3.0 technology, and PCI Express Generation 2.0 to create a system providing fast data flow for speedier transfers of work, games, and entertainment files.
