Sahara Computers has introduced the first AMD Opteron-based system to the South African market at the official launch held at the Sandton Sun. The Opteron is the first 64-bit processor compatible with the industry-standard x86 architecture and the highest performing 2-way and 4-way processor for servers.
"It's the only processor that is designed to run 32- and 64-bit applications simultaneously, without compromise," says Atul Gupta, MD, Sahara. "AMD Opteron runs on AMD64 - an architecture that enables 64-bit technology on the x86 platform enabling users to migrate to 64-bit technology on their own terms."
He says the AMD Opteron processor for servers and workstations is also the first processor in a new class of computing called AMD64, which directly follows the evolutionary path of the industry-standard x86 ISA, allowing development of a unified 64-bit computing infrastructure fully compatible with the pervasive x86 architecture.
"AMD64 technology allows customers to protect their investments by continuing to use all their 32-bit software until they decide to implement new, 64-bit software," he says. "Because the existing and new software can run side-by-side, computer systems based on AMD64 create the foundation of the industry's first unified 32- and 64-bit information technology infrastructure."
The processor technology promises to protect the valuable investment in existing 32-bit applications and server infrastructure while providing the ability to smoothly extend into the 64-bit world as and when the organisation is ready to.
"AMD is the first company to introduce a 64-bit processor compatible with virtually the entire installed base of computer technology," says Gupta. "64-bit computing is no longer a dilemma - it is an opportunity."
Sahara Computers locally assembles and markets the Sahara-branded PC via the reseller channel, and with its best of breed components, was the winner of CRN SA's Outlook 2002 "Components Distributor of the Year Award".
Sahara has branches in Midrand (head office), Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, with partners throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Sahara is the official distributor for a variety of international vendors, including Asus, Samsung, Creative, AMD, Microsoft, SMC Networks, Lexmark, Epson and Delta.
