At Computex yesterday, CPU manufacturer AMD introduced its new AMD Athlon to the market and announced the shipping of its Duron processor.
The new Athlon features enhanced on-chip L2 cache, and will be available in six speeds, ranging from 750MHz through to 1GHz in both slot A and socket A packaging. Compaq, Fujitsu-Siemens, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and others plan to introduce systems featuring the processor.
The new Duron processor, which is specifically designed for value-conscious business and home users, is AMD`s answer to Intel`s Celeron CPU.
The Duron is available at speeds of 700, 650 and 600MHz. AMD is shipping the AMD Duron processor to key computer manufacturers worldwide, but its formal launch is planned for later this month.
The 600MHz Duron should come in at around R600 (excluding VAT), while the 750MHz Athlon will cost R1 450 (excluding VAT). Local AMD representative Alex Mann hopes to have stock towards the end of the month.
