AMD has opened the doors of its latest "megafab", Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany. According to local AMD representative Alex Mann, this production plant should assure OEMs, distributors and resellers of a constant supply of AMD`s Athlon processors.

"Resellers looking at a for adopting new AMD processors in their prod line should feel very confident due to the opening of this new megafab, as the yield from the megafab 30 and the unit production combined with fab 25 should meet the need of the local reseller channel comfortably," says Mann. "This is a fulfilment of AMD`s commitment to securing 30% of total world desktop processor market with the Athlon technology."

The first product from fab 30 is AMD`s Athlon processor featuring 256 kilobytes of integrated on-chip L2 cache and 128 kilobytes of L1 cache. With approximately 37 million transistors and clock speeds initially up to 1 gigahertz, the latest member of the AMD Athlon processor family is targeted at the performance sector of the PC market.

Also of interest to the channel is AMD`s move to the Socket A option for both its new Duron and Thunderbird flavours. Mann says that this development will "factor strongly in costing and duties point-of-view". The Duron will also work with the Micron ATX form factor, resulting in smaller, cheaper power supplies.

Socket A motherboards should be available by the middle of this month.
