The giant billboards "proudly" announcing the advent of government's e-toll project, put up by the Democratic Alliance (DA) just before the weekend, are "unethical" and should be taken down, says the African National Congress (ANC).
The black and white, unbranded message that has the ruling party riled reads: "E-tolls. Proudly brought to you by the ANC" and is currently visible along Gauteng's N3 and N1 highways.
Keith Khoza, head of communications for the ANC, said on Friday that a team of officials had been sent to investigate what the party believes to be an unscrupulous act of attention-seeking. At the time, he said the ANC would probably lodge a complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission, and the Advertising Standards Authority of SA - depending on the findings. Khoza says the issue is now with the ANC's lawyers, who will take the necessary next steps.
"This is a matter that requires us to act quickly and decisively. We are convinced [the billboards] are unethical, as they purport to be from the ANC, but are not. They also mislead the public as to who is sending the message, but uses our name. If the DA wants to make a statement, they are free to do so - using their own name. We believe the adverts should be taken down."
