Android leverages NFC tech

Chip maker, ST Microelectronics, has released an Android app that shows how near field communications (NFC)-enabled phones can be used to interact with other consumer devices, reports NFC World.

New Electronics says the M24LR64 wireless memory chip can transmit and receive information from the Android application to a smartphone containing NFC technology or to an industrial radio frequency identification (RFID) reader.

This enables the device to exchange data, make financial transactions, object identification and rapidly track items using RFID and NFC.

“The combination of this new Android app and our innovative dual interface wireless EEPROM memory will allow users to communicate with a wide range of electronic devices via their NFC-enabled smartphones,” says Benoit Rodrigues, GM of ST's memory division.

According to Telecom Paper, this technology can be used in medical devices, home appliances, consumer electronic products and smart meters. The memory can also operate with RFID equipment used in the supply chain.

ST's dual-interface EEPROM products also feature a 32-bit password data protection scheme, enabling control of wireless read-and-write memory access.
