To maximise the utilisation of E1 or fractional E1 lines, Ariel Network Solutions (ANS) is offering the upgraded FCD-E1 Access Unit with built-in fibre optic modem and integral ISDN interfaces from RAD Data Communications.
"The FCD-E1 can be seen as a low-cost mini multiplexer and a rate converter which integrates PABX, ISDN, data and LAN traffic," says Mike Fisher, product manager at ANS. "By eliminating the need for external fibre optic modems in backbone extension applications, the new built-in fibre link enables carriers to benefit from the advantages of fibre optics - extended data ranges, immunity from background noise, security, reliability - while keeping equipment outlays at a minimum."
The fibre link supports ranges up to 100 km and is available with a wide variety of interfaces.The new option for integral ISDN "S" interfaces enables carriers to extend up to four ISDN lines over a single E1/Fractional E1 link. "Adding ISDN support to the FCD-E1 enhances its flexibility, making it a particularly attractive solution for multiservice access applications where minimising initial outlays is important," notes Fisher.
"An important advantage of the FCD-E1 is complete central-site management capabilities," continues Fisher. "The access unit includes an SNMP agent supporting remote management from the central site, over time slot 0 or a dedicated time slot. The FCD-E1 can also feed into RAD's DXC line of digital access concentrator products, creating an easily managed star configuration."
A variety of interfaces are available for the FCD-E1 access unit, including V.35, RS-530, V.36/RS-449 and X.21. There is an optional Line Termination Unit (LTU) for the main link, allowing direct connection to the E1 network up to a distance of 2.2 km.
