AltX-listed engineering firm Ansys has received another order, worth R48.6 million, from Transnet, the state transport utility, for the supply of a further 200 vehicle identification systems (VIS) for use on the country's railway network.
This follows a previous order from Transnet for 353 RFID vehicle identification readers and comes days after Ansys winning a R16.4 million order for the installation of digital cab systems on Transnet Rail's coal transport network.
The locally-developed RFID VIS readers are used by Transnet to track both rolling stock and their cargo and feed the position of the former to the Transnet Integrated Asset Tracking System, in real-time, using a GSM network.
The benefits to Transnet include an improved turnaround time for its rolling stock and real-time tracking and train monitoring, says Ansys CEO Alan Holloway.
He adds that several of SA's neighbours, including Namibia and Zimbabwe, have expressed interest in acquiring the technology.
Last week, Ansys took an order for the supply of 280 replacement Train Cab Systems (TCS) for locomotives operating on the Richards Bay coal line.
Holloway says Ansys is now in discussions with Transnet regarding the supply of a further 44 TCS units for locomotives operating on the ore line running between Sishen and Saldanha Bay.
