In today's world, cyber-criminals seem to constantly have the upper hand. Their ability to constantly develop, mutate and launch a series of attacks - including phishing and malware attacks - appears to be significant and never ending!
Detecting and preventing malicious threats will continue to be a challenge as criminals, like corporations, need to show profit for their efforts.
NSS Labs has developed an unbiased consumer anti-malware report to help users make better and more informed decisions when selecting an anti-malware solution.
The live testing methodology used by NSS Labs provides accurate real-world results of product effectiveness on blocking socially engineered malware at the source.
SecureData Africa, part of JSE-listed SecureData Holdings, the sole sub-Saharan distributor for Trend Micro, today announced that the latter has earned a 'Recommend' rating for its over-time protection rating and socially-engineered malware blocking score in the Q3 2010 NSS Labs Consumer Anti-Malware Products Group Test Report. While the average time for a security vendor to block a malicious site was 13.5 hours, Trend Micro had the fastest time, blocking malicious sites in just over three hours. Not sponsored or funded by any security vendor, the NSS Labs test emulated the experiences of average users and focused on threats active on the Internet gathered from the company's extensive intelligence network.
"NSS Labs has been leading the way in new testing standards,” commented Lee Bristow, Product Manager at SecureData for trend Micro products. “The live testing methodology used by NSS Labs provides accurate real-world results of product effectiveness on blocking socially engineered malware at the source. This testing methodology aligns with Trend Micro's mission of going beyond simple detection rates and focusing on protecting the customer from 'real world' threats by blocking most exploits at their source, the Internet."
This year, the Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security product, the company's consumer Internet security solution, was rated the best at protecting against Web-based socially engineered malware. Titanium achieved a malware over-time prevention rating of 90.1%, blocking 79% on download, and caught 76.4% of zero hour blocks, the percent of threats blocked upon first exposure to the endpoint. Its average time to block was just over three hours, compared to the overall average of 13.5 hours. Time to block is the average time after the first exposure for security vendors to provide a block to new threats.
"Trend Micro Titanium offers the best protection against Web malware, and has minimal impact on performance," continued Bristow. "The researchers found that this product is well ahead of most of the competition in protecting against Web-based socially engineered malware."
Trend Micro blocks threats at their source, keeping threats off the computer, thus improving the performance of the machine. With an impact score of 0.21, Trend Micro had the lowest impact score of the most effective products in the NSS Labs 'Recommended' category.
Trend Micro Titanium is powered by the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network cloud infrastructure. Through the Smart Protection Network, Trend Micro scans, filters and correlates more than 50 billion e-mails, Web sites and files every single day, and then leverages that data to rapidly identify and respond to emerging threats, and improve the existing response to known threats.
“As Trend Micro continues to extend the delivery of security from the cloud, customers of Trend's products continue to benefit in real-time, rather than having to wait for the next update, as the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network improves its security response,” concluded Bristow. “Every new Trend Micro customer joins millions of other Trend Micro customers to help create better and better security to keep out the bad guys in real-time.”
