APC by Schneider Electric introduces Smart-UPS RT units engineered for electro technical environment

Johannesburg, 26 Apr 2009

APC, a global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, has introduced its Smart-UPS RT 3 kVA (SURT3000XLI-ET), 5kVA (SURTD5000XLI-ET) and 6kVa (SURT6000XLI-ET) power protection models, engineered for the electro technical environment.

These very versatile, double conversion online UPSes expand APC's Smart-UPS On-Line product line, offering key features for ET installations such as facilities for hardwire input and output termination. Good voltage and frequency regulation with no break voltage in the transition to and from battery power makes the new Smart-UPS RT units the ideal products to support motors and linear power supplies, which are less tolerant to these issues.

The new units ensure availability, manageability and adaptability for any installation need and the double conversion on-line topology provides a no-break supply uptime, while additional runtime with uninterrupted power load is available thanks to the hot swappable, plug-and-play batteries and manual and automatic internal bypasses, which ensure power to loads if any UPS failure occurs. Up to 10 battery packs can be attached to the unit, providing considerable extended runtimes.

Manageability is ensured thanks to the serial interface and connection cable provided for local configuration and diagnostics via a connected PC, while a SmartSlot is provided to allow the use of a range of APC management cards, including I/O Relay alarms1, Building Management Integration 2 and Network Management Cards.

The units are easily adaptable to any space thanks to their tower configuration and the optional rack mounting rail kit; output voltage and frequency tracking tolerance that can be adjusted to meet various power environments; and ease of installation and flexibility as both the input and output connections of the units offer hardwire terminations.

“Building infrastructures and facilities environments face challenges that may differ from the traditional IT power needs. With the introduction of these Smart-UPS models specifically engineered for electro technical applications, APC focuses on the best features of its Smart-UPS product line and meets electrical installers' requirements. We expect the installers to find in these products' availability, manageability and flexibility the answer to their customers' changing needs,” says Rodney Callaghan, MD: Southern Africa at APC by Schneider Electric.

Other features of the new Smart UPS RT units include:

* A serial port for local configuration, diagnostics and communications with APC PowerChute software. Both 3kVA and 6kVA models have a DB9 connector, whereas the 5kVA has a RJ45-10P10C connector, and all models are provided with a suitable APC interface cable with a female DB9 connector to interface with connected equipment.
* EPO (Emergency Power Off) terminals that allow the connection of a remote EPO switch, so that the unit can be shut down in case of emergency.
* A control and status panel that provides a range of basic information, including LED “bar graphs” for battery charge, percentage load and LED indicators for UPS status, indication of general fault and battery replacement need.

* Stabilisation feet that provide a wider footprint to this compact tower unit.
* Battery temperature compensation charging that ensures the optimum life of batteries.
