Apple 3D display system patented

Business Insider.

The device allows users to interact with holographic images, or project their hands onto a screen to manipulate virtual objects.

According to iPhone FAQ, Apple's plan is to give the user feedback with audio and visual signals as they provide 3D input in a defined space. This space would be scanned continually, and the results of user action displayed in real-time.

Scanning of the user's hands or head would be done via a receiver box, while another separate component would project virtual sliders or buttons, etc, depending on the application. Apple has reportedly been working on 3D holographic displays, and already has a related patent on that subject.

Apart from the obvious mobile gaming uses, the system may also be used to create revolutionary new teaching systems for children who perform well with educational tools based on visual aids, says The Mobile Indian.

The probable uses may also include a virtual keyboard, which will be able to detect hand movements and register appropriate input.

There seems to be a larger Apple game plan at work; the company is getting control of a whole new gesturing system, which involves 3D visualisation.
