Apple Computer, the US-based diversified technology giant, will open two South African distribution centres though its local Apple IMC arm - creating about 50 new jobs.
Steven Davis, senior manager of marketing at Apple IMC, says the new centres will be at Clearwater Mall, on Johannesburg`s West Rand, and Menlyn Park, in Pretoria. Apple`s existing two centres are at the waterfront, in Cape Town, and in Sandton in Johannesburg.
The Clearwater Mall centre will open on 30 September, and Menlyn Park during the last week of October, Davis says.
"The recent demand for Apple products has meant we have had to open new channels," he explains, describing Apple`s local sales growth over the past couple of years as "huge". However, he is unable to describe sales growth in percentage or rand values.
Doubling its SA outlets is a big step for Apple IMC, Davis says, even though four stores might seem like a small number in comparison to the 150 Apple centres established in the US.
Apple Macs accounted for 39% of Apple`s sales last year, and some analysts predict Mac sales could grow 25% in 2007.
