ApplyIT unlocks plant information with launch of FlexiLOG

Johannesburg, 24 Mar 2006

ApplyIT, the South African software solution provider to the process manufacturing industry, has introduced FlexiLOG, a logging tool for capturing, reporting and communicating essential operations information to improve business processes, prevent downtime and enhance plant efficiency.

FlexiLOG forms part of ApplyIT`s integrated suite of operations management solutions. Much of what happens on an operating plant centres on people and their interactions with each other, the process and the physical plant. While most plants are equipped with state-of-the-art process control systems that monitor the physical plant and generate vast amounts of data, there is seldom a record of the human interaction that puts this data into context and turns it into valuable information.

FlexiLOG allows contextual information about current conditions, activities and critical events on the plant to be captured in logs which can then be communicated to management, operations personnel and other departments. Information from these logs is accessible in a knowledge base that can be used to generate reports, manage key performance criteria and assist in diagnosing and resolving faults.

The tool, which has a simple, user-friendly interface for recording and viewing logs, provides access to logs across the organisation. The flexibility of the system allows the capturing of specific data relevant to operations, areas or processes and caters for a range of log types, including shift handover logs, batch sheets, call-out logs, meeting minutes and downtime records.

Using the system, logs can be filtered for relevance, enabling users to view only those pertaining to their area or requiring their attention. Logs can be automatically routed via e-mail to notify other personnel of specific logs requiring action and can include a list of assigned tasks with specific details and instructions.

The capturing of logs against specific items of equipment enables the build-up of a valuable knowledge base of historical operating information for critical items of plant equipment from which to trace failures, diagnose and resolve problems and detect trends.

Mapping progress and sharing information or operating instructions between shifts is made easy through listing, recording and tracking tasks assigned to various personnel. Security and change control processes in FlexiLOG allow for restricted access, authorised sign-off on task completion and the mapping of full audit trails to ensure data integrity.

"Making available relevant information about critical events and processes to management and operations personnel improves efficiency by reducing response times, sharing knowledge and enhancing communications and coordination between departments," says Gavin Halse, MD of ApplyIT.

"Delivering insight into plant operations provides a vital knowledge base for measuring and improving performance, diagnosing and resolving recurring problems, and training new operations personnel."

FlexiLOG uses Microsoft`s .NET Framework to provide 24/7 application availability and enterprise-wide access to the application through a standard Web browser. Working on a Microsoft SQL Server database for maximum availability and data integrity, the software is compatible with MS Exchange, Lotus Notes and other mail platforms.

The software integrates with ApplyIT`s maintenance software to facilitate generation of work orders from operations logs. It also enables automatic cross-referencing of logs to permits in the IntelliPERMIT system, providing a consolidated view of production logs and safe work permits.
