Ardent extends business systems to the Internet

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 1999

Ardent , a management software company, has announced the general availability of RedBack Release 3, a Web Application Server for creating scalable, transactional applications for the Internet and corporate intranets. Using RedBack Release 3, companies can leverage existing IT assets, such as OLTP systems with proven business rules, to deploy real-time, e-business solutions.

"Ardent is now making it easier for companies to implement their e-commerce strategy, an essential ingredient for success in today`s market," says Simon Jeggo, GM: warehousing business unit at Ardent Africa. "Many of our customers have already deployed sophisticated transactional systems. RedBack 3 enables them to tightly integrate these systems with e-business applications using the front-end Web design tools of their choice."

From its open development capabilities to its re-usability of business rules and direct connectivity into UniVerse and UniData RDBMS`s, RedBack is enabling companies to launch interactive Web applications quicker.

RedBack Release 3 highlights:

.         Open Development Option - RedBack`s new business object model permits developers to design HTML pages and graphics using third-party Web design tools of their choice. RedBack supports all major Web design packages, including ASP and Java compliant tools such as Visual InterDev, FrontPage, or JBuilder, which can interface easily with the business rules in RedBack`s Web Application Server. The interface options also allow for simultaneous development of front- and back-end applications.

.         Persistent Connections - Persistent Connections give developers a way to better manage bandwidth by enabling Internet end-users to quickly disengage from the server after a request is completed, or remain engaged during the entire transaction when necessary.

.         SB+ Process Reusability - This new feature allows developers to use RedBack to bring SB+ applications onto the Web without duplicating or recreating proven business rules. Recognising the value of working business rules and the demand to have applications Web-ready, this new functionality makes it possible to bring your existing SB+ application to the Web quickly.

.         Performance Monitoring - RedBack`s new performance monitoring feature enables developers to test an application`s performance prior to launching. Reports communicate process duration and the location of technical difficulties and errors.

RedBack Release 3 is available immediately. Supported platforms include Microsoft Windows NT, Red Hat Linux, and all major UNIX platforms.
