Arivia`s Face Group secures R100m Polish licensing contract

Johannesburg, 31 Oct 2003

Arivia.kom division Face Group has signed a deal worth more than R100 million to develop a central register of vehicles and drivers.

"There is no centralised system in Poland. It resides in various areas, some computerised, but some still paper-based. What we will put in place is in line with international standards, but customised to reflect differences in terms of legal and local business regulations," says Face Group managing executive George Stander.

Poland is bringing systems in line with international standards as it tenders its application for European Union membership. Face Group has had ample experience fulfilling such requirements, having installed similar motor vehicle registration systems in a number of African countries.

"We have the base system and experience in customising it to local conditions," says Serfies Serfontein, MD of Face Group company Face Technologies, which heads up the Polish project. Face has implemented the Tanzanian motor vehicle registration system, the Zambian drivers licence system and Malawi`s transport information system.

The company has also pioneered automated fingerprint identification for welfare payments in SA and Namibia, with experience in national identification systems, voter registration and transport information systems. These include vehicle registration and licence systems in Lesotho, Botswana, Uganda and Zanzibar.

With a proven system, Face`s tender proved cost-efficient for Poland. "This is a new dimension in our business strategy. Having secured our home base and worked extensively throughout Africa, this launches us into the European market," says Serfontein. "The South African ambassador to Warsaw, Sikose Mji, played a strong supporting role in advising us."

The contract was secured in partnership with Softbank SA, a Polish IT company that won the tender, with Face Technologies being subcontracted to supply the software solution.

"Face Group intends leveraging this opportunity for more business in Poland and throughout Europe. There are significant opportunities with regard to identification documents, passports and election registration systems," says Stander.
