ARM, Globalfoundries design smaller chips

ARM and chip manufacturer Globalfoundries are joining hands to enable the design of smaller chips for devices like mobile phones and low-cost laptops, the companies said this week, reports PC World.

The companies announced a partnership under which mutual customers will be offered tools to design smaller ARM-based chips optimised for Globalfoundries' 28-nanometer chip technology.

Earlier this year, Advanced Micro Devices off-loaded its chip manufacturing into Globalfoundries, a joint venture with Advanced Technology Investment Company of Abu Dhabi.

Innovation facility to boost SMEs

A large open access innovation and technical support facility for the low carbon energy manufacturing sector is set to increase the turnover of small and medium-sized regional companies by over £6 million (R70.5 million), creating and safeguarding nearly 350 jobs in the process, according to EGov Monitor.

TWI's Technology Centre in Middlesbrough has £1.67 million (R19.6 million) of funding from One North East to extend the Renewable Energy Manufacturing Technology initiative. The project is improving the technical capabilities and business competitiveness of North East engineering and manufacturing companies.

The focus is on using innovative materials and joining technologies for the production of new products and processes. It will improve manufacturing competitiveness and the ability to successfully engage in regional, national and international supply chains.

M2 Tech chosen as Algor reseller

Manufacturing design technology consultant M2 Technologies has been chosen as one of seven MSD providers in the US and Canada to receive authorisation for Algor FEA products, states PR Newswire.

Autodesk recently acquired Algor, strengthening the Autodesk solution for digital prototyping with new advanced simulation functionality, including multiphysics, mechanical event simulation and fluid flow.

Algor is a provider of analysis and simulation software that is used for product design and development in the automotive, aerospace, medical, consumer products, defence, energy and utilities industries.
