Ascential brings Java focus to data integration

Ascential Software has broadened the focus of its product offerings with the release of the Java PACK, bringing Java-based integration and transformation extensions to its Enterprise Data Integration suite. The new Java PACK provides a new class of integration from within the Ascential Enterprise Data Integration platform. It enables companies to:

* Build external, bidirectional integration with Java-based enterprise application interfaces or Java connectivity extensions such as Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs).

* Leverage existing Java-based business rules, such as corporate profit calculations, either as standalone Java classes or hosted in an EJB container.

* Use any third-party or open source Java-based extensions or APIs (application programming interfaces) in batch and real-time data transformation processing scenarios.

* Extend Ascential`s integration capabilities by leveraging Java`s strength in component -based development.

"Java is widely deployed and used in SA, often for mission-critical applications," says Julian Field, MD of local Ascential distributor CenterField Software. "This announcement is of specific relevance locally, as it will ensure that these applications can be easily and logically integrated into the corporate IT architecture."

The Java PACK provides vendor-supported and repeatable Java capabilities as an optional part of the platform. DataStage designers can create multiple instances of the Java Client Stage to represent appropriate source and/or target integrations using previously compiled Java classes. The level of complexity and functionality is entirely up to the discretion of the developer.

Having developed their Java classes, they can use them repeatedly throughout multiple job designs for reading or writing data in batch or real-time. The new Java Transformer Stage allows Java experts to create and compile Java classes into runtime transformations as part of any data integration flow. An example would be a corporate profit calculation, or financial aggregation routine, using one row or multiple rows of data at a time.

The Java PACK also comes with its own embedded Java Runtime Environment, and requires no additional software installation. It provides a Java-oriented methodology for consuming and producing rows, writing to the DataStage log, accessing column metadata, and elegant exception handling. It includes complete Java API documentation (Javadoc) which contains easy to use and helpful code samples.

"Java developers can use Java PACK for integrating with a third-party application as a source or target that exposes a Java-based API," says Field. "For example, the Java Plug-in could be used to write a native JDBC interface to that database; or developers could use it to create a secure FTP or HTTP communications capability using existing third-party Java libraries."

The Java PACK is a chargeable add-on option for customers with current maintenance agreements.
