AST ESM provides integrated solution for database administrators

Johannesburg, 06 Feb 2002

AST Enterprise Systems Management, a business unit of the AST Group, has announced Quest Software`s Central for Oracle, which combines industry-leading database management tools into one product. This is the first tightly integrated solution that includes all components a database administrator (DBA) needs to perform daily tasks.

"Quest Central for Oracle will have a strategic impact on the South African database market," explains Haydn Pinnell, General Manager of AST Systems Management. "Traditionally, this type of product suite has involved complex installation procedures, with a lot of integration. As a result, clients saw very little return on investment."

Quest Central for Oracle improves application performance and availability by ensuring the database is being managed from one central console, as opposed to multiple point products. Since all database management tasks are performed within one tool, the DBA is immediately notified of impending problems thereby improving productivity and expediting problem resolution.

According to Pinnell, clients are often confused by the fragmented database management tools market, which encompasses a variety of point products from several vendors that only address certain duties database administrators deal with on a daily basis. With an integrated solution that includes all the tools database administrators need to perform daily tasks, users can spend the entire day in one product and issues can be resolved efficiently from a centralised console. Users will become more productive and their databases will run more efficiently.

The most vital component of an application is the underlying database. When a DBA is forced to manage a database environment with multiple tools, performance issues can quickly escalate, leading to poor application response time and even application outages. Quest Central for Oracle allows a DBA to use one tool to address all of their daily tasks, including database administration, storage management, performance management and ensuring high availability; and there is no latency in addressing these critical performance problems.

Additionally, because Quest Central for Oracle includes expert advice for problem resolution, productivity of the DBA staff increases, allowing organisations to accomplish more with less staff.

"Clients have been waiting for a solution like Quest Central that integrates all of Quest Software`s database management offerings into one console, without imposing the burden of a framework," concludes Pinnell. "The streamlining of Quest`s database management products into Quest Central for Oracle will increase productivity, response time, and application availability for organisations."
