AST Group incorporates ACMS as part of its RSA and international expansion in the mining industry

Johannesburg, 31 Jul 2002

The AST Group has incorporated ACMS, a mining consulting company specialising in the application of advanced technologies to practical mining activities, into its subsidiary Graphic Mining Solutions International (Pty) Ltd (GMSI). With offices in Australia, South Africa and North America, ACMS together with GMSI will assist in laying the foundation for AST`s international expansion in the Mining Industry.

"The incorporation of ACMS will allow the AST Group to be uniquely positioned in the mining market with the capability to provide a wide range of mining technical and consulting solutions, tailor-made for the client through an international pool of expertise and marketed globally," says Dolf Prinsloo, Managing Director of GMSI.

ACMS` flagship product, Mine 2-4D is based on the Datamine suite of products and forms an integral part of these solutions. Mine2-4D is the latest in advanced computer mine planning and scheduling software and delivers cost and performance improvements through efficient data management. Together with the Datamine products, the Mine2-4D solution provides a fully integrated system for engineers to manage the complexity of data from geological, survey and mine design layout by producing complete and detailed mine plans and schedules.

"The aim of Mine2-4D was to provide mining engineers with a tool that would take out the "monkey work" from mine planning and as such free up an engineer`s time to allow them to do mine planning. The results speak for themselves; our clients are claiming that they can now do in one day what took them a week to do. As consultants we are able to do numerous scenarios in the time it used to take us to do a single design. This has resulted in better mine plans being generated," says Ian Lawler MD of ACMS.

"The combination of the consulting teams and software technologies makes AST one of the leading solution providers. In a skills depleted market our clients can be assured that they will be getting the best skills and software available. The joining of forces is a win situation for all involved and as a team we are excited at what our new grouping is going to be able to do for the mining industry," adds Lawler.

GMSI and ACMS` complimentary clients, such as Anglo Platinum, Gold Fields, Impala Platinum, AngloGold, Barrick, Inco, Falconbridge and WMC to will have access to international best practices and expertise. This will enable the clients to have access to the tools, which enables them to manage the complexity of data from geological and survey functions to produce complete and detailed mine plans and schedules which maximise the profit available from any particular ore body.

The AST Group, through GMSI, partners with its clients to develop effective and efficient planning functions within their operations. Prinsloo adds that the company`s solutions for Mineral Resource Management across the mining value chain assist its clients in understanding and managing their ore resources more effectively.

"Interfacing real-time information with management information systems and modelling and simulating the various aspects of the mining operation leads to a more optimised mining business processes and provides decision-makers with the information they require to be able to make strategic decisions. This ultimately leads to more effective exploitation of the ore body," emphasises Prinsloo.
