AST provides Kumba with solution for change, configuration management

Johannesburg, 04 Feb 2004

AST Distributed Technology Services (DTS), a business unit of the AST Group, has successfully implemented the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) at Kumba Resources. SMS 2.0 will provide the company with a full inventory and enable it to provide relevant and regular software updates to users quickly and more cost-effectively.

SMS was deployed nationally and internationally throughout Kumba Resources to an estimated 4 000 PCs.

"The recent Active Directory roll-out, also implemented by AST DTS, allowed for easier SMS deployment," explains Henrik du Toit of AST DTS. "In addition, AST is Kumba Resources` technology partner, which meant we were familiar with their environment and thus allowed for a smooth roll-out."

Kumba Resources required a comprehensive solution for change and configuration management, which would allow it to perform asset and security patch management.

The asset management component will reduce software costs and allow Kumba Resources to stay compliant by understanding the installed application base and its usage. The security patch management will improve the security of its Microsoft Windows environment through increased vulnerability awareness and reliable targeted delivery of updates.

Future benefits for Kumba Resources from SMS will include standardisation of software and easier password resets, which will allow for a centralised infrastructure and lay a foundation for future upgrades.
