@lantic Internet Services, the largest independent consumer ISP (Internet service provider) - which was acquired by AltX-listed DataPro Group last year for R45 million - has announced that it is to resume its sponsorship of the Pumas rugby team.
The Pumas, often regarded as the `dark horses` of South African rugby, last year beat the Falcons to win SA`s rugby`s first division - and is hoping to gain entry to the eight-team Currie Cup competition this year.
According to Dederick Venter, marketing manager at @lantic, the Pumas rugby team is a "breeding ground of talent for South African rugby".
"During our 2004 Currie Cup season the Sharks bought a number of our players - and this was halfway through the Currie Cup season. This was naturally a blow to the Pumas, but it serves to point out just what level of talent the team is consistently producing as this kind of `poaching`, so to speak, is an ongoing problem."
He said the team is hoping to do well enough in the Vodacom Cup - now under way - to enable them to quality for one of the two remaining berths in the eight-team Currie Cup.
"The Pumas have put together a strong team, including the likes of Lourens Dunn and Darrell Koeries, regarded as two great running-rugby exponents. In fact, we expect the Pumas to continue to play their familiar brand of running rugby this year and, as always, they will be probably be regarded as the ever-present dangerous underdogs."
