Atos KPMG Consulting hosts conference to confront SA`s healthcare issues

Minister of health, Dr Tshabalala-Msimang, to give keynote address.
Johannesburg, 14 Aug 2003

In an attempt to address the challenges experienced by hospital administrators and management, Atos KPMG Consulting, the leading new generation management consultancy, will host an operational hospital management conference. The event will take place on 11 and 12 September 2003 at Vodaworld in Midrand, Gauteng and aims to shed light on issues that are important to the sustainability of SA`s healthcare industry.

"With the increase in medical costs and the sector`s constant battle to control expenditure, the South African healthcare industry finds itself in testing times," says Charles Dalton, director of healthcare management at Atos KPMG Consulting.

"As a leading management consultancy, we believe that to help the sector we need to embrace collaboration and make strides towards an integrated healthcare system," says Dalton.

Minister of health, Dr Tshabalala-Msimang, is scheduled to present the opening keynote address discussing government`s vision for the future of healthcare in SA. Head of hospital planning for the National Department of Health (NDH), Dr Thabo Sibeko, will cover the departments` plans for service delivery improvements as well as the importance of healthcare in public private partnerships going forward.

Additionally, the event boasts an impressive line-up of local speakers that includes Sagi Pillay, CEO of Johannesburg Hospital; Dr Deon Madyo, CEO of Kimberley Hospital Complex; and Dr Hein Botha, chief operating officer of Medscheme Integrated Care Division.

International speakers include Tobias Schneider of Universit"atsklinikum Heidelberg, who will talk about the benefits of an integrated health solution. Also speaking is Emmett Moriarty, a health consultant for Atos KPMG Consulting in the UK. Moriarty will discuss international PPPs and new international hospital management trends.

"This conference will advance dialogue on issues such as government funding, public private partnerships, as well as public hospital delivery," comments Dr Hein Botha. "The knowledge, experience and insight shared at this conference will be invaluable to healthcare professionals, researchers and government entities."

Running alongside the conference will be an industry solution exhibition with demonstrations on innovative products and service offerings such as wireless solutions and integrated enterprise systems for the healthcare industry.

The conference is co-sponsored by software solutions provider, SAP Public Services and Drake and Scull, leading facilities management and technical services providers.

Following the conference, Atos KPMG Consulting intends to run supplementary topic specific workshops countrywide that will cover, for example, labour issues.
