In today`s complex IT environment, it`s all about cutting costs and making budgets. Managing the software installed across a corporate network is a mammoth task, which is why today`s corporate markets are now turning to inventory management tools for easier management and cost-savings.
Autopage Cellular, a member of the JSE-listed Altech group, needed to manage and understand the software inventory which was installed across its countrywide network in order to reduce its software costs and to strategically align this with the company`s technology vision.
Bytes Technology Networks (BTN), a division of the JSE-listed Bytes Technology Group (a member of the Altron group), supplied Autopage Cellular with a suitable inventory tool which is a unique software inventory and usage monitoring tool.
Said General Manager: Microsoft Division, BTN, Nick Perkins: "The tool is a fully integrated solution geared specifically for software asset management (SAM), which helps organisations to automate the SAM process, reduce licence and support costs and ensure licence management. The tool`s unique approach to SAM integrates legal, financial and technical issues, assisting organisations to make informed decisions. Our solutions are easy to implement and manage, and deliver rapid ROI and lasting business benefits."
"BTN were able to align Autopage`s software usage strategy with their software requirements and, in so doing, assisted to trim down their annual software expenditure by some 20%, providing ROI in excess of 1600% within six months. As this is an ongoing management tool, these costs are guaranteed on an annual basis by the align policies BTN deploys in managing business licensing," said Perkins.
Ian Wylde, IT Director, Autopage Cellular, said: "The rapid deployment of the tool from BTN across our national network provided immediate results, enabling us to see our inventory statistics across multiple sites which allowed us to better understand our inventory immediately."

Autopage Cellular
Autopage Cellular, a member of the JSE-listed Altech group, forms part of Altech`s telecommunications division, which generates about two-thirds of the group`s revenue and half its operating income. It has triumphed in a bruising market, and can now look forward to a revenue lift from new generation cellular technologies such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). It is one of just two independent cellular service providers (SPs) to survive the brutal industry consolidation which whittled the number of participants from 17 in 1994 to just four.
We saw value in being able to offer clients the best deal at the best price, and to do this we had to remain independent of the network operators.
This means we can approach clients on behalf of Vodacom, MTN or Cell C with a deal which is in the clients` best interests, rather than the operators`.
This independence is one of Autopage Cellular`s greatest strengths.
Autopage has built up a base of more than 450 000 customers, 300 000 of them contract subscribers (about 16% of this market) and 150 000 prepaid customers.
