Autopage closes in on RICA target

Johannesburg, 11 Apr 2011

Altech Autopage Cellular, a unit of JSE-listed Allied Technologies, has registered 91% of its subscribers in terms of the SIM-card registration Act.

Under the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA), all mobile subscribers must provide proof of and residential address before the end of June, or be cut off from the network.

Boyd Chislett, Altech Autopage Cellular's MD, says the company is nearing the goal of registering its entire customer base.

“Altech Autopage Cellular is pulling out all the stops to ensure 100% of customers are registered by 30 June. We don't want any of our customers inconvenienced when the deadline comes into effect,” he notes.

Chislett says Autopage is using a mix of communications platforms to make sure the remaining 9% of subscribers register before the cut-off date. “Failing to register in terms of RICA is very serious, because - not only will your SIM card be deactivated - unregistered SIM cards hamper SA's fight against crime,” says Chislett.

Autopage has more than 120 outlets across SA and offers deals across SA's mobile networks. At the end of February last year, it had almost a million subscribers.
