Avaya scores high reliability goal for 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany converged network with Extreme Networks Premier Services Program

Johannesburg, 30 Jun 2006

Avaya, a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, and Extreme Networks, Inc announced that Extreme Networks is providing advanced network monitoring and performance management to support the converged communication network that Avaya is supplying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.

Extreme Networks Premier Services Program, a collection of management and visibility tools that address multi-vendor network environments, is helping Avaya to manage and monitor the FIFA World Cup network across 70 locations, supporting as many as 45 000 network connections that span 12 separate stadia and dedicated media centres. Avaya uses PSP to proactively manage the persistent demand placed upon the network, stemming from 15 000 volunteers, 15 000 media and broadcast staff as well as millions of viewers and spectators worldwide who will be fed real-time statistical information.

As a member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection community, Extreme Networks PSP suite of network performance and monitoring tools provides visibility across all connected network devices and geographic sites, allowing Avaya to view the network as a cohesive infrastructure, monitor and prioritise network traffic and forecast bandwidth issues.

"To track the performance of the network and respond to changes quickly and appropriately, we needed a solution that could not only calculate the uptime for switches, but also monitor installation and performance of the stadiums as they come online," said Bryan Jefferson, senior technical director for the Avaya FIFA World Cup Project. "We needed a strong partner solution and Extreme Networks provides us with the effective tools, analysis and information to monitor overall data network usage and to forecast potential application problems before they occur."

"Extreme Networks PSP provides the FIFA World Cup Germany network with the comprehensive visibility and proactive, centralised management that can scale easily with the sporting world`s largest converged voice and data network," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice-president of marketing and product management for Extreme Networks. "Working with Avaya, we are pleased to assist with the delivery and performance management of this world-class network that will serve thousands of fans in the coming weeks."

Extreme Networks Premier Services Program (PSP)

PSP enables proactive network management with modular service portfolios consisting of network monitoring, network and system optimisation analysis, and network traffic and application analysis. PSP offers a unique, customised and hosted multi-vendor network management toolset. A dashboard application allows for real-time access to gain visibility into network performance, availability and to determine which applications drive consumption of network resources. By using statistical sampling based on sFlow and NetFlow technology, PSP provides visibility into application usage, traffic, bandwidth and performance. PSP also provides customised reports (on-demand and scheduled), alerts, alarms, logs for detailed operational monitoring of network traffic by application with subnets and divisions using sFlow and NetFlow processes.
