AVG Technologies has unveiled AVG 2011 Internet software suite that has enhanced protection for social networks, following feedback from the security company's online community.

In response to feedback from AVG's global community that called for a faster security product with better threat detection rates, particularly around securing social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, AVG 2011 now includes several enhancements that it says improves its usability.

CEO of AVG Technologies, JR Smith explains that AVG 2011's strength comes from leveraging the power from its global community of more than 110 million users.

“With our new people-powered protection technology and approach, everyone is encouraged and empowered to be part of the solution. Everyone who is part of the AVG community is assisting to protect everyone else who also uses our products by sending us over 1.5 billion potential threats from all over the world for evaluation every single day,” Smith explains.

According to AVG, 99% of today's threats are Web-based and live on legitimate Web sites for less than 24 hours.

As part of the suite, AVG's real-time scanning solution, LinkScanner, is available for PC and Mac users. LinkScanner automatically checks and protects, in real-time, links exchanged within social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.

In addition, AVG has enhanced its Smart Scan technology to ensure its 2011 version will not slow a computer down. The technology learns which files are certified and safe, and only scans new, uncertified files on a user's computer. This allows the PC to run faster during the virus scanning process.

Noting that many of users are heavy users of multimedia applications, AVG 2011 includes a 'game mode', which scans and protects users' computers behind the scenes without interrupting full screen, multi-media applications with pop-up notifications.
