Axis Communications enables XML control of documents

By Global Research Partners
Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2000

Leaf Industries, the sole value-added distributor in Africa for Axis Communications, today announced that Axis Communications now supports XML for its innovative document servers. This delivers breakthrough capabilities for integrating scanned documents from copiers and scanners into applications and systems. The AXIS 7000 Network Document Server provides a convenient platform to send and store documents, offering numerous possibilities for conducting business more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The AXIS 7000 transforms a stand-alone digital copier or scanner into an intelligent document device, enabling simple, low- cost distribution and archiving of documents within networked office environments. Addition of support for XML gives the AXIS 7000 much greater flexibility and power for seamlessly integrating digitised documents into applications such as document management, workflow, ERP, knowledge management, and Internet services.

XML Enables Data Sharing

XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) is a Meta-language standard that defines a document-mark-up language for data elements in a digital document such as a Web page. Developers can create text tags to identify a piece of data and lift it out of documents for use in other applications, effectively enabling documents to be shared like database records. Although similar tag structures are used, HTML tags define layout-how elements are displayed-whereas XML tags define content-what those elements contain.

Adding XML control to documents is very easy. The Meta Information functionality makes it possible to write an XML file that specifies information to be requested before a document is scanned. The output of this file, i.e., the content and format (XML, HTML, or almost any other text format), can then be sent over the network.

The AXIS 7000 combines the scanned image with the Meta information using XML to move data easily between different applications, facilitating business-to-business transactions. Now users can easily network their business information and processes such as invoices, purchase orders, contracts, and other documents and integrate them into higher-level project management and workflow systems.

Protects Current Investments

Providing a single, common platform for all document sharing needs, the AXIS 7000 Network Document Server offers added value and investment protection for digital copiers and scanners. This technology allows companies to leverage their hidden asset of installed digital copiers by providing a platform for introducing digital documents into workflow processes.

A user simply places a document on a scanning device (such as a digital copier) and selects an e-mail address. The AXIS 7000 compresses the digitised document data, turns it into a file, and attaches the file to an e-mail message. The digitised documents can now be shared using currently implemented network infrastructures and industry standards over e-mail. The file can also be sent to a file server, a Web browser, a Web address, or a printer.

Offering a wide variety of industry standard formats (TIFF, JPEG, PDF, PCL) and transport methods (SMTP, FTP, LPD, Raw TCP), the AXIS 7000 Network Document Server offers many options for conducting business in more efficient and cost- effective ways. Its architecture includes embedded Web pages, and administrators can use a Web browser for configuration and management. It installs in minutes, and very minimal training is required, resulting in timesavings and increased operating efficiency.
