A major retailer in the US Midwest is installing Axis network video products to upgrade the monitoring of the company`s entire chain of 210 super-centres in a deal valued at approximately $1 million for Axis.
The network video system integrates the video with a point-of-sale system which helps management monitor anomalies in the sales process. The video servers digitise video feeds from the stores` existing analogue cameras and store image date to a network video recorder (NVR) - for use with Revelation Software from Spiritech which includes the point-of-sale technology.
"This is a case where a client recognised the advantages of a digital system but had a large base of existing analogue technology with up to 100 cameras per store. Axis 240Q video servers provided a cost-effective way of using the existing investment whilst getting the benefits of an NVR," comments Roy Alves, Managing Director of SCS Distribution, exclusive distributor for Africa of Axis equipment.
The network video system helps the super-centres to record, store and manage video feeds more efficiently. The company previously used racks of VCRs to record the footage with tapes being manually changed every eight hours and requiring large amounts of secure storage.
"We have seen increased demand for network video systems in retail environments," says Alves. "The technology integrates easily with many other systems found in retail stores such as point-of-sale and access control systems, so retailers are able to better manage inventories, loss and fraud."
All of the images are recorded to standard servers, so there are no tapes to change and store. In addition, managers can quickly scan or locate video based on incidents and time and date information rather than having to manually wind through hours of videotape.
