AXiZ announces arrival of New Media USB Modem

Johannesburg, 06 Dec 1999

AXiZ, official distributor of New Media Technology products, has announced the arrival of its first USB communication device, called the USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer. This pocket-sized, fully functional 56Kbps fax/modem is compatible with the latest V.90 protocols and communicates with all leading service providers (ISPs) at the highest possible speeds.

At the heart of the USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer is a hardware implemented 56kbps data pump which is not dependent on the host computer`s processor for it`s function. "Most other manufacturer`s USB modems, which are small in size, utilise a `software` modem design, which is dependent upon the host computer`s processor in order to operate," says Patrick Reeves, mobile communications product manager at AXiZ. "Therefore, when operational, a `soft` modem slows down the performance of the host computer it is attached to. Also, the performance of a `soft` modem is not as high as with a modem with an actual hardware chipset."

The USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer communicates at 56kbps speed for fast downloading of images from the Internet. A maximum -directional speed of 115kbps is attainable under the best of conditions. This fax/modem is 100% compatible with other 56kbps, V.90 fax/modems, and is flash upgradeable, which means that if there are any future firmware changes made to this modem, a user can easily upgrade the unit by directly downloading the update from New Media`s website.

This fax/modem also features MNP 2-4 and V.42 error corrections protocols as well as MNP5 and V.42bis data compression protocols, which ensures for a quick and reliable data connection. The USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer is uniquely designed and weighs only about 5 ounces and it`s small footprint doesn`t take up a lot of desk-space and can easily be carried in most notebook computer cases. The unit is equipped with three LED status indicator lights, which signal Power, Ready and On/Off hook modes.

Installing the USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer is very simple. When the device is attached to the USB port of the computer, Windows 98, (or Windows 95 with USB supplements) will automatically detect its presence. The user will be prompted to load the installation drivers provided in the package and the computer will then configure the modem and the installation will be completed. It`s that easy. After installation, users simply attach the fax/modem when it is required and disconnect it when it is no longer needed. Since this USB fax/modem supports Plug & Play and Hot-Swapping, rebooting or shutting down is unnecessary. Also, the unit does not need a power supply, as all of the necessary power needed to operate is obtained from the USB port of the host computer.

The USB Pocket 56K NetSurfer is compatible with Windows 98 and with Windows 95 OSR 2, (with USB Supplement) and may be used on IBM Compatible Pentium/Pentium II or higher processor based computers equipped with a standard USB port.
