Axiz goes mobile with Intel

Johannesburg, 10 May 1999
Axiz, South Africa`s leading Intel distributor, has extended its Intel processor product line to include Intel mobile processors. Axiz will distribute both Intel Mobile Modules (IMM) and Mini-Cartridges to resellers and OEMs as part of its mobile upgrade service.

"Intel`s industry-standard mobile processors extend the value we offer our resellers as their notebook upgrade centre of choice," says Axiz mobile product manager Patrick Reeves. "It further complements our extensive Intel product line that includes desktop and server processors, motherboards, server platforms, the entire networking product range and mobile network adapters."

Intel on the road

Intel redefined mobile processor technology with the development of its Tape Carrier Package (TCP) chips, which resolved the size, heat and power-consumption problems of older ceramic CPUs in mobile computers. TCPs were initially used to launch mobile Pentium CPUs. However, because the CPU was "soldered" onto the mobile motherboard, manufacturers were forced to replace whole motherboards for CPU upgrades. Intel addressed the problem with the introduction of Intel Mobile Modules (IMMs) that incorporated TCP circuitry and could be slotted in to IMM-compatible motherboards for simple CPU upgrades. Intel has since developed the Mini-Cartridge design for non-IMM notebooks.

IMMs ushered in a new breed of processor, codenamed Tillamook, in 266, 166 and 133MHz versions. In April last year, Intel debuted the mobile Pentium II processor, based on Intel`s .25-micron technology in both IMM and Mini-Cartridge versions, raising the bat of mobile computing performance even higher.

Axiz will stock mobile Pentium II CPUs in both 256K on die and 512K cache configurations.

Reeves expects most notebook processor sales to come from OEMs and system assemblers. "We have an extensive dealer network that specialises in notebook assembly which we expect to benefit most from this announcement," he says. "As for resellers and end-users, Intel`s innovations have opened the door for mobile users to enjoy better levels of performance without replacing their existing machines."
