The spat between the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Telkom will see the parties back in discussions today, after the union has consulted its members.
The union and Telkom have confirmed talks will resume at midday today, following lengthy negotiations held until late last night. Telkom says it is waiting for the union to brief its members.
CWU secretary-general Gallant Roberts explained the union would meet with Telkom later today.
Neither Telkom nor the union have elaborated on the current offer. Neither indicated whether the union members have accepted it. However, the last noted offer stood at 8%, while the union is demanding 13%.
Union members staged an official strike last Monday and Tuesday, demanding that Telkom close the financial gap between workers before it implemented its 7.5% salary increase stipulated in a three-year agreement, which will end this year.
The CWU also marched from the Union Buildings to Pretoria central on Wednesday, and picketed outside the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.
Telkom had initially put R78 million on the table to narrow wage gaps and elevate workers to a higher salary band. However, the union indicated in its earlier statements that Telkom had reduced this amount to R68 million.
The fixed-line company is not pleased with the conduct of union members during the industrial action. Telkom says it is investigating the possibility of at least 17 attacks of vandalism and sabotage by striking union members.
Cable infrastructure and street distribution cabinets were damaged in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. However, the union has denied any member involvement in these incidents.
