Balanced scorecard specialist Maroun to speak at second data warehousing forum

Johannesburg, 15 Jul 2002

The product-agnostic data warehousing forum launched under the guidance of business intelligence specialist Knowledge Integration Dynamics (KID) will have its next meeting on 18 July.

The topic is the balanced scorecard, presented by Natalie Maroun, MD of High Performance Consulting, the specialised consulting division in the Learning Resources group.

Effectively implemented, the balanced scorecard methodology helps companies respond to internal and external challenges, and can extrapolate corporate vision into measurable objectives, backed by comprehensive strategy. It links objectives, measurements, targets and initiatives to communicate and measure an organisation`s business strategy.

"As a methodology the balanced scorecard maintains that business aspects must be measured if they are to be managed, and it is emerging as a powerful driver of business success," says Maroun. "It gives companies an accurate and comprehensive view of their performance, monitoring customer service, market share and financial performance, business processes and innovation, and generally reflecting growth potential more astutely than company earnings."

Maroun emphasises that her presentation will not focus on business intelligence technology; rather, it will focus on the philosophy of the scorecard, and how High Performance Consulting has evolved it in the South African market. It has yielded great success, notably at the Department of Justice.

Paul van der Merwe, KID operations director and coordinator of the project, says the balanced scorecard is fast emerging as the most effective methodology for understanding business goals and strategy at all levels in an organisation.

"The combination of balanced scorecard and business intelligence applications provides the most comprehensive business performance management solution available to business today," says Van der Merwe.

Maroun says the balanced scorecard must be woven into a company`s day-to-day operations to enable employees to determine whether they are meeting their goals.

"Performance metrics that are easy to understand and interpret have a greater potential to change organisational behaviour."

Set to meet every six weeks, the forum was launched in response to demand and need from the business intelligence community for a place where its members can meet, exchange ideas and information and draw upon each other`s experiences, for the benefit of the industry as a whole. Initially set up by KID, the forum does not centre on product, and all business intelligence users are encouraged to join.

The next forum will be on 15 August. Robin Wagner, sales manager at customer insight services company Knowledge Factory, will deliver a presentation on achieving customer insight through data warehousing.
