Bangladesh to get VOIP licences
Voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) traffic in Bangladesh could rise following more VOIP licences being issued in the country, reports Telappliant.
The Bangladeshi government confirmed that private operators will be given the new VOIP licences after new legislation comes into force.
It could result in more VOIP service users as more people will have access to the technology. The licences will not be available until August.
UC platforms get a boost
Around 58% of European organisations are deploying unified communications (UC) platforms and will complete the deployment by 2012, says CBR Online.
A research survey by Aspect revealed that 17% of the firms have already deployed UC platforms, while 41% of survey respondents expect to deploy the platforms within the next two years.
Aspect says 56% of organisations responding to the UC Trends 2010 survey use six or more UC tools such as VOIP, document sharing, presence and video.
VOIP threatens telco operators
VOIP-based calling is a major revenue challenge to global telecom operators, according to a survey by Voice&Data, notes CIOL.
The increase in the popularity of formal as well as informal (and illegal) Internet telephony operators, which bypass the licensed operators, is eating into the revenues of the telecom players, the survey added.
However, analyst firm Ovum had suggested that mobile operators must embrace VOIP and attempting to block mobile VOIP is not a viable long-term strategy for the operators.
