South African financial service provider, BoE Bank, the business or commercial division of the BoE group, has seen a 50% improvement in the performance of mission-critical software since implementing Compuware SA`s DevPartner Studio suite for development and testing.
BoE Bank has utilised DevPartner during the component rewrite of one the bank`s critical in-house tools.
"A few components were not functioning optimally and we realised that even though we could roll the application out, response times would not be acceptable to our users," says Philip Blignaut, manager, systems integration at BoE Bank. Knowing that the users were anxiously awaiting the new application, Blignaut and his team decided to run TrueTime, an application and component performance tool, to identify the problems that were jeopardising the software`s performance.
Says Tracey Rouessart, account manager at Compuware SA: "TrueTime, which is part of our DevPartner offering, is the ideal tool for problems such as BoE Bank`s, as it automatically reports on application and component performance.
"TrueTime works like a stopwatch that starts when the tested code starts executing and stops when it`s interrupted. With each interruption on the CPU, the stopwatch starts and stops, accumulating the actual time it takes to execute the code."
The tool therefore produces consistent results no matter how many times the program is run.
After running TrueTime, the team at BoE Bank used Compuware`s telephonic support to interpret the results. "We were really impressed with Compuware, not only did they immediately help us, but enabled us to accurately interpret TrueTime`s results," says Blignaut.
With the help of TrueTime, bottlenecks were resolved and code changed, enabling the software to perform quicker.
"These steps all resulted in a 50% performance improvement of our in-house tool," comments Blignaut.
The bank also utilises various other DevPartner products in the daily running and development of the bank`s systems. Tools such as CodeReview, TrueCoverage and SmartCheck are, for example, used to check the code integrity of these systems.
Blignaut sees BoE Bank and Compuware`s partnership going from strength to strength. "We intend on using Compuware to assist us with further enhancements to our systems - with the main focus being on the eventual development of a web-based application environment."
