Bay Networks has retained its number one position as the leading provider of Layer 3 routing switches, according to a study by market research firm The Dell`Oro Group. The report shows that Bay captured 53 percent of the Layer 3 routing switch market, growing revenues by 71 percent and market share by eight percentage points from the previous quarter.
According to Dell`Oro, this fast-growing technology segment grew by 45 percent from the previous quarter and is expected to reach US$3-billion (about R18-billion) by the year 2000.
The report shows that Bay also captured over half the total Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet switch market with 51 percent revenue share in its first full quarter of Gigabit Ethernet switch shipments. The company also dominated the overall Gigabit Ethernet market segment with 28 percent of revenue share.
These successes represent Bay`s continued delivery of proven enterprise frame switching solutions that use the latest technologies -- including advanced application support such as Quality of Service and Class of Service, multiple levels of redundancy and advanced-level management -- to provide high-performance networks that support business-critical applications.

The combination of Bay Accelar routing switches and BayStack workgroup and desktop switches delivers advanced Quality of Service capabilities, such as application-level prioritisation and access security. The Accelar 1000 routing switch product family includes six models, ranging from stackable to chassis configurations, supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps transmission speeds. The Accelar routing switches support redundant switch fabrics, redundant Gigabit Ethernet links and redundant power supplies.
