Bay Networks, the pioneer in routing switch technology, has extended its award-winning Accelar 1000 routing switch product family by introducing the Accelar 1050. The new product enables customers to build cost-effective networks specially designed for business-critical applications. The Accelar 1050 also extends application intelligence to wiring closets by offering advanced Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities such as application prioritisation and access security. It also provides 10/100/1000 Ethernet connectivity in a standalone fixed-configuration for desktop switch aggregation, server farms and power users. By combining it with Layer 2 desktop switches, the Accelar 1050 delivers application intelligence to wiring closets without the complexity of routing. With zero packet loss and an ultra-low latency of less than 10 microseconds, the Accelar 1050 forwards non-blocking multi-protocol traffic at over three million packets per second (3 Mpps). Bay now provides a complete enterprise network solution with switched 10/100 connections to the desktop with the addition of the Accelar 1050. It also enables application prioritisation and access security capabilities in the wiring closet for less than $200 per port for the total solution. QoS capabilities such as application prioritisation and access security should be applied close to the end-user in order to prevent business-critical applications from being affected by the typical oversubscribing of risers and desktop switches. Enabling application intelligence at the edge of the network provides edge-to-edge prioritisation for these applications. Today's larger organisations are considering policy-based networking to handle their diverse traffic requirements. This includes multiple service-quality classes, traffic filtering, the need for complex security policies, multiple path selection and IP multicast. These features are best supported by switching devices which have application intelligence. The Accelar 1000 routing switch family's unique architecture enables capabilities such as Protocol, Priority queuing and IP Multicast support. These features enable existing networks to easily migrate to high-speed, high-function intranets without a costly and disruptive backbone overhaul. The Accelar 1050 is a standalone fixed-configuration unit which includes 12 autosensing 10/100BASE TX ports for server and workstation attachment. It also has a single 1000BASE-SX Gigabit Ethernet port for server or a corporate backbone connectivity. It is well suited for aggregation of 10/100 desktop switches with provision for Gigabit Ethernet riser connections. The Accelar 1050 is ideal for deployment in server farms where accelerating inter-subnet traffic to centralised servers is critical to overall system performance. The Accelar 1050 is based on the same distributed, hardware-based architecture of the other Accelar 1000 products (including the modular Accelar 1200, Accelar 1250, and the standalone Accelar 1100 and Accelar 1150 routing switches) delivering wire-speed IP routing at speeds equivalent to Layer 2 switches. The Accelar 1050 is expected to be available in July 1998 and will cost in the region of $7,495. A second model, the Accelar 1051, is also expected to be available in July and will cost in the region of $8,250. The Accelar 1051 includes a LinkSafe redundant physical connection for the 1000BASE-SX connection to provide maximum network availability.
